Employment and career advice - Take the time to evaluate your current career position and question ‘is it time for a change’?

Trying to maintain an enthusiasm for a career is not as simple as it may sound and it is easy to underestimate why this interest your work is so important to your long term well being. If you are on the wrong career path for your interests or you are working for a company that you don’t believe in – then this will make re-evaluating your career position even more important.

Remember when deciding on a career path, do not restrict your choice of job to just those that you see advertised. Really wanting to do a particular job has far more value to your career than just applying for any job just because it happens to offer a higher salary.  

Struggling working longer hours and being expected ‘to do more for less’ is a very common theme today and not necessarily one that you just need to accept.

May be now is the time to stop taking your career for granted, take stock, review your options and make a step in a new direction that has always interested you. Work may not feel quite like working if you are really interested and passionate about the subject matter itself.

A major factor to insuring that you have a successful career is to make sure that you understand yourself. Don’t expect your employer to manage this for you – this is something that you need to take control of for yourself.

If you feel engaged in your work, understand and feel appreciated for what you do then there is a very good chance that you are already in a field of what that suits your personality and interests.

When taking the time to understanding yourself, make sure that you identify your key natural strengths and weaknesses – and be honest. You may be under estimating or over estimating your abilities in key areas of your work. It is important that you base your career on your key strengths, understand what those are and improve in any areas where you need to be better.

It is important that you identify which of your natural talents would derive excellence and personal fulfilment should you have a job or career that is best upon them.

The following questions are a sample of those that we use to create a specific profile for yourself  - so we know what to jobs and careers to help you target :-

• What are you key strengths?

• What motivates you the most about a job? (i.e. what are your key motivational traits?)

• If you had a job that was more suited to your personality, do you think that it would seem less like a job?

• Where do you prefer to work? May be you don’t have a preference?

• Would all organisations appreciate your skills and personality?

• Are the skills you enjoy using the most part of your core job?

• Do you believe in yourself?

• Does your CV truly reflect you, your personality and the successes in your career?

Careers Support - Now may be a good time to ask yourself a few basic questions to see what you are really looking for in a new job.

How many times have you asked yourself the question “what is the job for me”?

Be honest with yourself and ask yourself the following questions :-

• Do you have a job that just provides a wage, or do you have a job that you really want to do?

• Are you disappointed with your career?

• Has your job gone stale?

• Do you hate Sunday evenings and Monday mornings even more because of your job?

• Do you think that the week is dragging by Monday lunch time?

• Have your friends and family noticed that you are unhappy in your work and therefore ‘not your normal self’?

• Do you feel that you have a lot more to offer, but the job you are in does not allow you to achieve your real potential?

• May be your know that you have a lot more to offer, but you are not sure of your own key strengths and would like some advise what these could be?

• Are you considering a career change?

• Are you looking to make a career change?

• Are you looking to make the next step on the current career path that you are on?

• Are you relying on your current employer to help you guide you through your career or would you prefer to be control of your own destiny?

• Maybe you already have some options and you are not sure which one to chose?

Our Rules of the Road

• Always make sure that your CV describes your true personality and how your have applied your personality to your current or previous roles, which have resulted in success.

• Prepare thoroughly for an interview – do your research, not just about the job but also about why you are the best candidate for the job?

• Be confident about looking for and applying for the jobs that you really want to do.

• Always search for your ideal job. Don’t just go through the jobs that you happen to find listed.

• An interview is a two way process – are you right for the role and is the company right for you?

• Should you receive a job offer - decide what you would base your decision to accept or reject the role upon before hand.

• Don’t be frightened to go self employed if this is what you want – the chances are that if you are this self motivated to have thought of the question that you would be fine being self employed.
